#69 Sameer and Emma
Sameer
Marriage is a union between two individuals when they decide to be with each other in the good times and in the bad. The social norms and laws are such that marriage to the one you love is only but a dream for same-sex couples, we are treated as ‘others’ not worthy of the right to marry. I believe anyone should be able to unite with the ONE they love, the one they want to spend the rest of their life with! I support marriage equality around the world with the hope that it might come true one day for everyone in love.’
Emma
Marriage equality needs to be addressed globally. Couples around the world deserve the right to declare their love through marriage regardless of religion, culture, gender, nationality. As a migration agent, I have represented many same-sex couples. Many couples have to hide who they are from their family because their religion, culture and society does not accept them – because of who they love. Love knows no borders. Gender, culture, religion, and law should not prevent two people from declaring their love for each other through marriage.
Dressing up in traditional Indian wear, honouring Sameer’s culture, was my way of declaring to my friend and the community, he can love whoever he wants to and still remain true to his culture. He should never be made to feel he has to choose his culture over love, to abandon the traditions/customs of his country because of his sexuality.
