#51 Kristen and Kristina

Kristina and I met through a mutual friend. I then went on to be her personal trainer and she was my hairdresser. We hadn’t spent a lot of time together in the year leading up to us getting together, but we didn’t need to. We were connected in a way neither of us could describe. Almost a year ago we started to spend some intimate time together getting to know one another. We sat on my couch, ate pizza, and talked about our personal lives, deepest secrets, and dreams. We fell in love instantly. Of course, like any couple we were scared, our friends didn’t quite understand how we fell in love so quickly but we fell so hard for one another that nothing else mattered. Kristina took me out on a date, told me she was falling for me and the rest, as they say, is ‘history’.

Kristina proposed to me in NZ a few months later, it was so romantic and beautiful, and she was so beautiful, how could I say no? We are both passionate, loving, caring, honest, artistic, and spiritual people. We understand one other like no one else ever has. We are best friends, lovers, and partners. We want the same things as the majority of people, gay, straight, bi or trans. We want to be able to love freely, to be accepted, not just tolerated, and we want a family. We want our children to grow up with love, respect, dignity, and grace. We want to walk down the street hand in hand and not have to worry about people judging us simply because they don’t get us.

The love we have for one another is the same love that the people of Australia who have the right to marry have for their chosen partner. We did not ‘choose’ to be a part of the LGBTIQ community, but we did choose one another for life and all we want is to be able benefit from the same legal rights as straight people. I love her and she loves me. IN THE END THAT IS ALL THAT MATTERS. We got legally married in New Zealand, but it’s not recognised here. Come on, Australia. Together we can do it.
